About The Speaker:
“Jack of multiple trades” might best describe my life as a Jesuit.
I was born and raised in New Orleans. I attended Jesuit High School there and entered the novitiate at Grand Coteau in 1961. In my time of Jesuit formation I completed degrees in philosophy, theology and sociology. Upon ordination in 1975 I undertook social science research and teaching at Loyola University, New Orleans while also serving as superior of the Jesuit formation program there. Over the years I combined this academic calling with other Jesuit leadership roles at Loyola, Spring Hill, Georgetown, Berkeley, and also on international mission in Paraguay. I have also served in various Jesuit administrative roles and from 1990-96 I served as provincial superior of the New Orleans province Jesuits. In 2007 I was the founding director of the Jesuit Social Research Institute (JSRI) in post-Katrina New Orleans and I continue as a JSRI associate.
In recent years I have been missioned to the ministry of the Spiritual Exercises. I am particularly interested in relating the gifts of the Exercises to the arts (music, images, poetry, etc.) and the reconciling faith that does justice, so central to our contemporary Jesuit charism.
